Palm Reading by Ketut Liyer.

One of my favorite books, Eat Pray Love, a travel memoir by Elizabeth ("Liz") Gilbert, features a medicine man/artist/palm reader who lives in Bali. His name is Ketut Liyer (pictured). Liz spends four months living in Bali and spends much of her time with Ketut. I decided to meet this interesting medicine man myself and have my own palm reading.

When I arrived at his simple home, there were already two families waiting to see him. I watched him take his time with each family -- saying prayers while ringing a bell, consulting his medicine books and providing each family with his care.

Ketut examined my palm and predicted I would live to be 120 years old (yikes that is old!); that I drove too fast in my past life and sometimes I still drive too fast (I admitted this might be true). He said I had one minor car accident in the past and would have another minor accident in the future. He said I would have two marriages and the second one would be deeper. He said I am a "good woman," with a good heart, but sometimes impatient and too emotional – so "have to be careful." He said I have artistic talent as a dancer and would be famous (hard to imagine, even though I love to dance). He said at age 40 I had enough money and at age 45 would be wealthy. (Sounds good to me.) He made some other predictions, that I will keep private for now – but we will see what happens! - Heather

Dear Alex and Heather,
I too have just finished reading eat, pray, love. It is an amazing book and it has no doubt changed the way I look at life. I'm curious as to how you were able to find Ketut Liyer. I am looking into making a trip of my own! :)

Hello...

I too just read the book which was recommeneded by a friend knowing I am headed to Bali in March 2008. I've had readings in the past only to be disappointed by how off they were. Liz seemed to have realisitic experiences based on Ketut's reading and I'm wondering if you did as well(?)

Hi Alex & heather
your blog came across when I was looking for the very same guy..Ketut Liyer for a very similar reasons (I just finsihed Eat Pray Love by Liz Gilbert LOL) Different is : I am Indonesian (Balinese) living in Toronto (Canada). Of all our yearly visit to Bali, never once had I heared about this guy and yet I know him from a new yorkers widow's book LOL Life is indeed funny.
And now faith had lead me to your blog in search of Pak Liyer (well actually in search of my true self to be exact)
being indonesian I grew up with the philosophy that one MUST have a GURU to find our path of life (aka: guides to our journey of life) I have one, also Balinese with a huge workshops/temple/students in the heart of Kerobokan Denpasar Bali. His name is Uncle Dewo. He is not a mdicine man and he is not 85 years old like Pak Liyer.
Anyway if you could be kind to email me details on how to make an appointment with pak Liyer I would be forever grateful.
My name is ZARA ZETTIRA ZR (U can google it incase youre not sure I am for real needing your help) my email thebaliconnections@yahoo.com
Pls email me...or facebook me if u have facebook like half of the populations of this universe did LOL
Take care, and NAMASTE

I have just returned form Bali with my 20 year old daughter and we were able to find Ketut and get our plams read by him. He is a sweetheart and we both fell instantly in love with him. He is funny, friendly and unforgettable. Just go anywhere in Ubud and ask for directions to his house, everyone knows him there. He is easy to find, but expect to wait in line he is a very busy man. But it is well worth the wait. This is one the highlights in my life nevermind my trip. he is exactly the way Elizabeth Gilbert describes him in her book. You will find him sitting cross legged oin his porch enjpying the sunshine and all the visitors that have come to see him. His family is friendly , warm and very welcoming. His little Grand Daughter sold me one of her paintings and it was beautiful and so is she. Ketut really is who he says he is.I took a tour guide with me who never knew him and he said "this man is really a Holy Man" after spwaking with him and observing Ketut for a couple of hours. He talked to him in their language and translated for me, but Ketut 's English is just fine, I had no problem understanding him. He is a tiny little man who was wearing and Armani shirt and his sarong and spoke with a squeeky voice. I beleive he must be around 85 years old but looks great for age even without all of his teeth. Time will tell if his predictions will come true. He did LOVE MAGIC on my back and gave me a special blessing. He is GREAT!

Hi,

I spent two months in Bali this summer and loved it so much I'm going back at the end of November. I went to visit Ketut three times and took friends along with me to see him too.

I just want to let people know that if they want an amazing Christmas gift for someone who loved Eat Pray Love, I've decided to sell my Ketut 'success magic' painting. This will be enough spending money in Bali to live for a few weeks fortunately and hopefully bring joy to someone at Christmas morning while I'm surfing. :) I listed the painting on ebay today. Thanks for posting this. Michael

Hi
I went to Bali in January and met with Ketut. His English was hard to understand but here is basically what he said...
That both my husband and I would live to 105 years old, that I need to be more patient, that my work "is bad then good again" and that I would have 3 children and only be married once to my husband who was with me at the time. He told my husband that he drives too fast and discussed how bad traffic is and the terrible car accidents that happen and how people loose limbs and get prosthetics. He said that my husband would get married only once but he would have 4 kids and the 4th would die.
I was pretty confused and all this info scared me pretty bad. I was able to draw an interpretation to what he said about my work and about my husbands driving but I am not sure if those are things anyone could apply to their lives...? As far as the having kids and one dying I am pretty creeped out! I don't know if this guy says the same things more or less to everyone or if I should be freaking out. Also, was he implying something with the driving to my husband!?
If anyone else was told this same info please let me know as it will be reassuring that he just says the same thing to everyone.
Thanks!

Hi,
I visited Ketut last week and reading through all these posts about him he more or less says the same things to everybody: you will live to 100 years, don't drive too fast, he told me that i have a lot of nergy, also sexual energy. I was a little disappointed; I expected more concrete details and not such generic statements. Somethign weird happened to my hand the next day. It turned red where he held it. It almost looks like a burnt mark. Did anybody else experience this?

My boyfriend and I have just been to see Ketut Liyer in Ubud, we both sat together with him on his porch. First he told us that he sees good and bad things and that he would tell us both good and bad, he said that he would be very honest and if he wasn't honest the gods would punish him.

Ketut addressed me first, he looked at my face and told me that I was very very pretty and that the frown lines on my forehead showed that I was very smart.

He told me that my lips were sweet like sugar and that I would be very lucky in life, he told my boyfriend that I was a very good girl and that he was lucky to have me.

When he read my palm he told me that I would live for 100 years, that I would marry once and have 3 children. He also said that I was very artistic and that I would be successful and rich in whatever business I chose to do.

He said that I had a tendency to be impatient and that I should stop driving so fast.

In each of the back and legs analysis he said I was very lucky to have such a strong body.

Needless to say i was delighted with my reading and my encounter with Ketut...... right up until the moment when he literally repeated each and every word to my boyfriend, during his reading, right before my eyes. The only differences were that his lips were sweet like 'honey' and that he would have 2 kids.

It seemed like a very well rehearsed recital, which completely shattered all of the enjoyment I had gained from reading the Balinese part of Eat, Pray, Love.

Ketut charged us 500,000 rupiahs for the reading (equivalent of $50 us/aud) and I counted another 20 people waiting to see him.

I hate to be such a cynic but it appears that this 96 year old man is killing it by telling each 'patient' exactly the same thing, almost word for word.

It was an experience nevertheless but I advise not to get your hopes up and if there is a long line of people waiting in front of you, it probably isn't worth the wait.

I was slightly disappointed when I went to see Ketut. In the span of all the fame and fortune I think he began to take advantage of people. In Dec 2010 My boyfriend and I went to see Ketut. The Balinese refer to him as Ketut "Liar" I thoughtthey where cynical and decided such a "credible" healer would have some truth in his statements, till we arrived and I heard him repeat the same thing to everyone who was before me. I wanted to leave but decided he might see something else in me. How foolish.

The same script was repeated, (same script different cast type of scenario) You have sweet lips, will live till 100 and would have 3 children. I would not suffer from Arthritis, funny thing I thought considering I already have arthritis. Successful in whatever I will endeavor to do, I was smart (not smart enough to realize I had just been taken advantage of and literally conned off my money). The list goes on and on. What a shame, such an old jolly looking man who is respected and whose religion teaches many beautiful things including "KARMA" would do this to people is beyond me. Money?

Well all I can say is Happy Life Ketut and may you live to be 100 years old.

CON MAN!!

My husband and I decided to go & see Mr. Liyer to have a palm reading done. We had our readings done seperately to see how they would 'match up'. Well....I didn't expect them to match up quite so well !! He said the EXACT SAME THING to me and my husband WORD FOR WORD!!
Here is how his con man's script goes:

1. You are pretty/handsome
2. You have pretty ears
3. You have pretty, pretty perfect nose.
4. You have a strong chin
5. You have a line between your eyes, on your forehead, when you frown....this means you are lucky & smart.
6. He will tell you that you are: Very Lucky, Smart, Strong & Healthy, an Influencer (of people), & will be successful at whatever you decide to do.
7. He will "read" your arm and tell you that you are very healthy & strong and will live to be 100 (in my husband's case he first said 100 and then 101)
8. He will "read" your back & tell you that he sees a "Lotus Flower" which is very lucky & good.
9. He will "read" your legs & circle his finger around each knee and tell you that you will not have arthritis.

It's funny...he had read my husband first & asked him how many kids he had. My husband told him 3 children....and had to repeat it 3 different times cause he kept forgetting & at the very end even said he had 2 children. (I think he is going senile to tell you the truth). Then he "read" my hand and got everything wrong. He told me I had 2 children (even though my husband had just told him we have 3) and that I would be married only 1 time. WRONG! I had already been divorced and was with my 2nd husband. Each time I told him no, and he said "Oh, Oh....it is a small line....difficult to read. I see it now."

In my opinion: He is a 100% con-man that is taking complete advantage of people seeking meaning & answers in this life. His son will sit on the 'stage' with him & simply collects the 250,000 Rupiah ($47 US dollars) from each hopeful victim. When my husband paid (cash only of course!) he said the money box was completely stuffed full of cash.

I asked our guide if he shares some of the money with the community or just keeps it for his family....he said he only shares with his family and has given NOTHING to the community.

Please, anyone reading this blog, do NOT give your hard earned money or time (We waited a total of 4 hours to be told absolutely nothing).
